Fertility is defined as the natural capability to produce offspring and has been at the core of Vanmechelen’s work for several years. Not only did he find out that his hybrids from the Cosmopolitan Chicken Project create more offspring than its purer-bred parents, together with fertility specialist prof. dr. Willem Ombelet he also started The Walking Egg, a non-profit organization that strives to raise awareness about childlessness in resource-poor countries and wants to make infertility care available and accessible to a much larger part of the population. In this arena, with dr. prof. Ombelet as protagonist, topics like fertility health seen from a global perspective, biodiversity and fertility in humans and animals, new fertility technologies and maternal health are discussed.
